5 Ways to Celebrate Farm Safety Week

Written by Good Day's Work | Aug 27, 2015

Although we believe that farm safety should be practiced every single day that you are on the job, it’s even more exciting when a whole week is dedicated to celebrating and encouraging safety in agriculture.

Farm Safety Week is celebrated annually by the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety (NECAS), and this year it will be observed September 20 to 26. This year's theme is “Ag safety is not just a slogan; it’s a lifestyle.”

Farm injuries and fatalities are prevent-able through education, and this week serves as a good reminder to rural communities that agriculture is one of the most dangerous occupations in the U.S.

The best way to celebrate and promote safety is to get involved. You can help promote our industry and the importance of safety within farming in a number of ways:

  1. Take to Social Media—Twitter

The best way to get the word out is to spread the word yourself. Use the hashtag #FSHW15 to talk about how you practice safety in your agricultural operation. Share tips, resources and ideas across the network.

  1. Attend a NECAS Safety Webinar
NECAS will be offering a webinar each day of Ag Safety Week at noon. You can involve all of your employees and continue to educate them. Here are the topics for the week:

Monday—Rural Roadway
Tuesday—Health
Wednesday—Children’s Topics
Thursday—Confined Spaces in Agriculture
Friday—Tractor Safety

  1. Get Resources

Visit the National Farm Safety and Health Week website to find such resources as brochures, tip guides, safety facts and more. Follow @NECASAG on Twitter to stay updated about the week.

  1. Join #AgChat

NECAS invites everyone to join them for #AgChat on Tuesday, September 22 from 7 to 9 p.m. to chat about agriculture, safety and Farm Safety Week!

#AgChat is a weekly moderated conversation on Twitter for people in the business of raising food, feed, fuel and fiber. It is a virtual venue for participants on Twitter to share viewpoints and ideas about the issues impacting agriculture advocacy, such as sustainability, water, communications, agronomy, animal welfare, USDA programs, mainstream media coverage and public perceptions of farming. The goal is to create an ongoing, open dialogue among the various players interested in agriculture by sharing tips and tricks for connecting with consumers.

  1. Say Thank You

Take time this special week to thank your employees, co-workers, families and supervisors for all they do to promote a safe workplace. Make it fun—bring in doughnuts or cupcakes for an Ag Safety Week kickoff on Monday, September 21, for example.

Good Day's Work is excited to celebrate National Farm Safety and Health Week this year, and we hope that you will do what you can to join us in our mission to promote a safer environment in agriculture.
